revealed layers of ljubljana

The city is revealed in various ways. By the silhouette of the towers on the far horizon, by dimension of city boulevards or by the vibrancy of urban center. We can experience it as a collage of beautiful facades and well- designed squares or as a rich social environment, where urbanity allows a diverse personal interactions. The city is also the space of a collective memory of community. Careful reading offers us the possibility of deeper understanding of the conditions and reasons for its occurrence. Through layers of archeological remains and through footsteps of historical and contemporary architecture, it reveals us its history. When you are open and immersed deep enough you can listen to the story it is telling us. Only then one can feel the city as a whole, understand the logic of its beginning, and align with all its memories without which today it would not be such as it is... And the more we know it, closer it is to us and more we like it...

We are interested in how the first settlers experienced the area of Ljubljana gate, which is a natural strait between Rožnik and Castle hill through which flows river Ljubljanica. What they have identified in this space that have drafted into the network of former roman settlement called Emona? Ljubljana has grown organically on the ground of Emona and today enjoys all the benefits that this location offers. Urban network, positioned between river Ljubljanica, Castle hill and Rožnik hill, extended to the plain of river Sava on north and to the Ljubljana moor on south where it intertwined with natural landscape. The city overgrew slowly the traces of the past. In their urban interventions Slovenian architects Edvard Ravnikar and Jože Plečnik revealed hidden layer of Emona and on the unique way involved it in their work. They revealed archaeological remains and so one still can today through their interventions experience the spatial relations and emptiness on the same way as in former Emona... Arrangements along the roman wall in Mirje, design of Vegova Street, Square of the Republic and Ferantov Garden can be a source of inspiration for us how to deal with the archaeological layer of history of Ljubljana...

Where and how can we reveal layers of roman Emona in existing city structure? What opportunities give hidden layers to contemporary city and its public spaces? How could be layers of the city better understood and deeper experienced?

AIM OF THE WORKSHOP

In the last ten year Ljubljana went through several transformations which liberated existing public spaces for public. The aim of the workshop is to enlarge this approach to some of non-public places with a new proposal for a House of Literature.
Three sites with different contextual specifics should be re-urbanized with an urban intervention – a new public building and by that enable the surroundings to live and connect better through the new programme.

HOUSE OF LITERATURE

is a building for many different users (poets, writers, readers, children, pupils, students, teachers, philosophers, tourists, architecture students...) and events (World literature congress, literature festivals, project Ljubljana reading, project Books and creativity in the field of culture, project Book and the City… Ljubljana, world capital of books). Together with bookshops, book-fairs and library, it promotes reading, writing, books, social and cultural interaction...
Programme of the house: aula (50 people)_spaces for events, presentation, readings, lectures, talks(10-50 people) _bookshop _workshop room _club space _offices _meeting room _storage _small kitchen _coffee _wardrobe _toilets _technical spaces.
